Sehawag Records with his 309 notout

No batsman had scored over 250 runs in a day's play of a Test for over 50 years; Virender Sehwag smashed past the mark on the way to scoring his second triple-hundred, one of several statistical highlights from the record-breaking day in Chennai:

Sehwag's unbeaten 309 is the second triple-century by an Indian - he had scored the first in Multan in 2004. It was also the first time that a batsman had gone past the 300-run mark in India; VVS Laxman's epic 281 in Kolkata in 2001 was the previous highest score in the country.

Sehwag needed only 278 balls to reach 300, making it by far the fastest Test triple-hundred. Sehwag also becomes the third batsman after Don Bradman and Brian Lara to score two triple-hundreds.

Sehwag scored 257 runs in the third day's play, a feat bettered only by three other batsmen, with Don Bradman's 309 runs in a day against England in Leeds in 1930 topping the list. However, the last time a batsman scored over 250 runs in a day was in 1954, when Dennis Compton made 273 runs on the second day of the Nottingham Test against Pakistan on the way to his 278.

Sehwag's two partnerships so far - 213 for the first wicket with Wasim Jaffer and an unbroken 255-run stand for the second with Rahul Dravid - make it the first time double-century stands have been posted for the first two wickets of a Test innings.

Two triples indicate Sehwag's appetite for scoring big runs but what confirms it is the fact that each of his last ten centuries have seen him go past 150, including a couple of double-hundreds and triple-hundreds.

Sehwag's unbeaten 309 in a total of 468 for 1 so far equates to just over 66% of his team's total. The record for a completed innings is 67.35%, when Charles Bannerman scored 165 of the 245 made by Australia in the first innings of the first-ever Test in 1877. Another Australian, Michael Slater, is second on the list, having made 123 in Australia's 184 in the second innings of the Sydney Test against England in 1999. Laxman's 167 at the same ground is third; he scored 63.98% of India's 261 as they went down to Australia.

In the 14 innings when Sehwag has scored a century, his strike rate has been 77.79. Among batsmen with at least ten Test hundreds, only Adam Gilchrist has a faster strike-rate in centuries (99.64). The fact that his overall career strike-rate is 75 also reveals his tendency to bat at the same tempo regardless of his score.

For the second time in his Test career, March 28 turned out to be a day to remember for Sehwag. In 2004, on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan, Sehwag had finished the day on an unbeaten 228, and went on to score 309 the following day.

The World's Billionaires

After 13 years on top, Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. That honor now belongs to his friend and sometimes bridge partner Warren Buffett.

Riding the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock, Buffett has seen his fortune swell to an estimated $62 billion, up $10 billion from a year ago.

Gates is now worth $58 billion and is ranked third richest in the world. He is up $2 billion from a year ago, but would have been as rich--or richer--than Buffett, had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! at the beginning of February. Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim HelĂș now ranks as the world's second richest person with a net worth of $60 billion.

India beat Australia, win CB tri-series

India ended their tour of Australia on a high note when they beat the hosts by nine runs on Tuesday to win their best-of-three finals series 2-0.

Sachin Tendulkar scored a superb 91 and paceman Praveen Kumar went on to capture four wickets as the tourists followed up Sunday's six-wicket win in Sydney with a thrilling victory at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The Australians, who also lost last year's tri-series finals at home to England, recovered from a terrible start to give themselves a glimmer of hope when James Hopes (63) and Matthew Hayden (55) made half-centuries, only to come up short.Tendulkar just missed out on back-to-back centuries after helping India post 258 for nine after they won the toss and batted first.

The master batsman followed up his unbeaten hundred in Sydney with a patient display to set India on the road to victory.

The tourists were heading for a much bigger total when Tendulkar and Robin Uthappa (30) piled on 94 for the first wicket before Australia's bowlers struck back.

Part-time spinner Michael Clarke (3-52) captured three wickets, including the prize scalp of Tendulkar, while paceman Nathan Bracken (3-31) also picked up three wickets in the frantic final few overs.

Tendulkar was untroubled as he cruised to his half-century off 70 balls but missed out on his hundred when he misjudged a delivery from Clarke and spooned a catch to a diving Ricky Ponting at mid-on.
Yuvraj Singh made a run-a-ball 38 in a 54-run stand with Tendulkar but their dismissals triggered a lower-order batting collapse.

The Indians lost six wickets for 50 runs in the last 11 overs after looking as though they would get closer to 300.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni kept the tail wagging with 36 from 37 deliveries but received little support from his team-mates as the Australian bowlers stemmed the run flow.
The Australians made a terrible start to their run-chase when they lost three wickets in the first nine overs.

Adam Gilchrist, in his final appearance before retiring from international cricket, was caught behind for two off the third ball of the innings then Ponting (one) and Clarke (17) quickly followed.

Hayden and Andrew Symonds steadied the innings with a fourth wicket partnership of 89 before they both departed in the same over.

Hayden was run out at the non-strikers end for 55 and Symonds was trapped lbw by Harbhajan Singh for 42.

Mike Hussey and Hopes kept Australia in the hunt with a stand of 76 but the wickets began tumbling as the world champions were forced to take risks to reduce the required run-rate and they were bowled out for 249 in the last over.

India vs Australia Final

India will seek to exploit the batting slump of some of Australia's middle-order batsmen when they clash with the world champions in the first of the best-of- three tri-series finals in Sydney on Sunday

Australia's batting has been their Achilles' heels with their middle order, notably captain Ricky Ponting [Images] and Andrew Symonds [Images], coming a cropper against the subcontinental rivals in the league stage.

Apart from the century he scored in the last game against India, Ponting has been out of form since the Test series while Symonds has notched up only one half century in eight matches.

Matthew Hayden [Images], who was recently reprimanded by his Board for calling Harbhajan Singh [Images] a "little obnoxious weed" has also not fired at the top, having scored just one half century in the seven outings.

Never in the 30-year-old history of the triangular series have Indians managed even a solitary win in the finals against the hosts.

India's three previous experiences -- in 1985-86, 1991-92 and 2003-04 -- had resulted in straight drubbings but Australia's slipshod form this season promises a turn for the better for the Indians.

Ironically for all his unprecedented success, Tendulkar hasn't managed a hundred in 20 outings against Australia all these years; nor one against other teams in 38 matches in all he has played on Australian soil.

Numbers also have piled up for India not with bat, ball or in field alone. Indians also have been booked the most by match referees this summer. Four have been reported and three have been found guilty. Dhoni [Images] came close to being hauled up for using illegal wicketkeeping gloves before being let off with a reprimand alone.

The bad blood between the two teams has ensured that not a seat at the SCG would be vacant. Match referee Jeff Crowe, and the two umpires, would have to really strain hard to stop things getting out of hands in the middle.

Hayden is an automatic starter and his duel with the Indian bowlers, and fielders, would carry a spark of its own. Ponting and Symonds too should be subject to special attention in the field from the Indians, as it would be the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth [Images] from the Australians.

The conditions at the SCG are likely to help the batsmen though the wicket was pretty damp to start with this afternoon. Hot blazing sun for the rest of the day is predicted which would allow the batsmen to come on to their own.

Dhoni did not want to comment if he has evolved as captain and was flippant when asked if there was something about the Sydney water, as rival captain Ponting had said the other day, which was causing the bad blood to exist between the two teams.

"May be they should get a few samples (of the water) to the lab and get it tested. It doesn't make a difference to us anyway as we've been drinking mineral water," was the cryptic reply of Dhoni beneath a typically benign smile playing on his face.

The Indian skipper was asked if Hayden was rested in the game against Sri Lanka [Images] as punishment for his unprovoked remarks against Harbhajan Singh the other day.

"May be (he was given break) because he wanted to be in the boxing ring ... He wanted to box," said Dhoni barely able to control his giggle as he offered his reply.

As for the possibility that his side could create history, Dhoni was again at his flippant best.

"I don't know about creating or not (history) but you become a part of history, whether for good or bad, once you play."

Dhoni has the rein of India's young brigade for sometime now but he did not want to comment if his captaincy has had a learning curve in the last few months.
